Phurchok Ngawang Jampa (1682-1762)

In Phurchok Ngawang Jampa’s work Origin of the Four Seats and the Two Tantric Colleges Called a Rosary of White Lotuses, the first line at the back of page no. 13 states thus:

“In the past when Je [Tsongkhapa] was alive, apart from those Dharma protectors as mentioned in Buddha Shakyamuni’s own Tantric scriptures who remain truly committed to their oaths, there was not even the slightest evidence of any object for propitiating any worldly perilous devils in this monastic premises. As a result, all the masters and their students lived in absolute harmony, and the monastic tradition of study and practice greatly proliferated. Even Machen Pomra, the local god of Tsongkhapa’s birth place, was allotted a place outside the monastic compound.

Nowadays, there are many who blindly claim to be his [Tsongkhapa’s] followers although in truth they are not; while putting on the set of three monastic robes, they take refuge in a devil: Thus, many unwanted misfortunes continue to befall them. Therefore, if we the ordained ones abide by our vows properly, the Dharma protectors—who are bound by oath and had seen the Buddha in the past — will definitely provide instant assistance.”

It is mentioned in Phurchok Ngawang Jampa’s work that during Tsongkhapa’s time, there was no tradition of propitiating worldly wrathful beings in Gaden Monastery. Phurchok Rinpoche then objects to those who put on the set of three monastic robes and take refuge in a devil. He attributes various misfortunes in the monastery at that time to such mistakes. However, in this work, it is not explicitly mentioned who the devil was.
