The biography of Yongzin Yeshi Gyaltsen called Supplication to the Most Eminent Master, the Pervasive Vajrasattva, Yongzin Maha Pandita Yeshi Gyalsten Pelsangpo Called the Lotus that Beautify the Doctrine of the Able One was written by Gyalwa Jamphel Gyatso, the 8th Dalai Lama. In it, starting from the second line of the front-page of the Tibetan page no. 178, it says thus:
“All attendants of Panchen Rinpoche must work sincerely and single-pointedly to ensure that the young reincarnation carries on well with his study. Instead, if you were to think that he is a Buddha and does not need to study, and in this way if you were to neglect your own responsibility, this would amount to an act of disgrace and disloyalty. When the Buddhas take the form of ordinary beings, they need to study just like an ordinary being. A scholar without any study or an adept without any meditation will be helpful to the Dharma and sentient beings only superficially. Therefore, all of you must work hard, and constantly remind him of the need to give utmost priority to his studies.
‘From among the things to be remembered, it is very important for you to keep in mind that this [so called] new Dharma protector has only brought ruination to Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. Therefore, the Dharma protectors propitiated by Panchen Lobsang Choeki Gyaltsen would suffice; you will only bring upon yourself much inconveniences by initiating the propitiation of this new demon.’
Thus, Yongzin Yeshi Gyaltsen gave this and many other kinds of advice to the attendants of the young Panchen Rinpoche.”
After Panchen Palden Yeshi died, Panchen Tenpai Nyima was recognised as the former’s reincarnation. The young Panchen Lama and his entourage went to Lhasa to see Gyalwa Jamphel Gyatso, the 8th Dalai Lama. Yongzin Yeshi Gyaltsen, the main tutor of the 8th Dalai Lama, was then living in the chamber above the convention-hall of the cabinet [of the Tibetan Government] at Potala Palace. That chamber was called the ‘Blissful Land’. This advice was given to the attendants of His Holiness Panchen Tenpai Nyima when they also received an audience with Yongzin Yeshi at his chamber.
In this advice, Yongzin Yeshi Gyaltsen speaks about a new protector. Who could that have been? There is a worldly protector in Tashi Lhunpo called Gyalpo Nyizera but he was bound by oath and appointed as a protector by the 1st Dalai Lama himself. When they praise this protector, some in Tashi Lhunpo speak of him of being the same mental continuum as that of Gyalwa Gendun Drupa, the 1st Dalai Lama. Apart from this worldly protector, Kali Devi and Chamsing are two of the trans-worldly protectors of Tashi Lhunpo. As none of those three are new to Tashi Lhunpo, by negating other possibilities, one can infer that it was Dolgyal that Yongzin Yeshi Gyaltsen was referring to when he said ‘the new protector’. He also calls this new protector a new devil.
